Amongst other things Skiathos is famous for the beaches
that are carved around the island.
Southern beaches
You can access almost all of the southern beaches by
island's main road that runs alongside south coast. The
main road links town to the famous golden-sand beach of
Koukounaries. A bus travels this route about every
20-30 min. In most of the beaches you will find taverns
and sea-sport facilities.
Starting from the ones nearest to the town there are:
Megali Ammos (or Ftelia), Vassilias, Ahladies and Tzaneria Bay.
Moving on we find: Vromolimnos, Platania and Troulos Bay.
All of the above are good sandy beaches and the easiest to
reach.
The road ends at one of the most beautiful bays in the world,
Koukounaries. This beach is well known for its golden sand that
sparkles in the sun. The word koukounaries means "pine cones"
in Greek and was named like that because of the pine trees
that grow there.

A short walk from Koukounaries you can find Banana beach and
the splendid and isolated Agia Eleni beach.
Northern beaches
The north coast of Skiathos has also many fine
sand-and-pebble beaches. Some of them, however, can
only be reached by boats that leave Skiathos port
every morning.
Continuing north from Agia Eleni beach there is Madraki Bay
also called Xerxes' Bay because Xerxes had some triremes
there during the Persian Wars. Then you can find Megalos
Asselinos and Mikros Asselinos, both sandy but windy too.
They are accessible by a new road that starts from the bus
stop at Troulos beach.
Lalaria, next to Kastro, is a fascinating beach with big
egg-shaped pebbles which have been smoothed and bleached by
the waves. Water there has an amazing vivid shade of aquamarine
because of the highly reflective pebbles and marble that coat
the sea bottom. The only way to get there is by boat.

Another beach that can be reached by car is Xanemos, driving
east from the port on the road after the airport runway.
