Nowadays in Skiathos, none of the Byzantine period
ecclesiastical monuments survives. Most of the monasteries
that remain date back to the time of Turkish occupation.
Some of them are :
-=> church of Christos in Kastro
-=> the monastery of St.John of Parthenis
-=> the monastery of St.Charalambos
-=> the monastery of Panaghia Eikonistria ( Holy Virgin )
-=> the monastery of Evangelistria ( Annunciation )
The monastery of Panaghia Eikonistria ( Holy Virgin ).
The founding of the monastery is related to the finding of
the icon, around the end of the 17th century. The icon of
Panaghia Eikonistria was also initially kept there. The
church is a single-naved basilica with dome. Panaghia
Eikonistria is the patron of Skiathos.

The interior is painted and among other frescoes there
is one of St.Christopher with a face of a dog
(St.Christopher is almost always painted that way
after 16th century ).
The monastery of Evangelistria ( Annunciation ).
This is the most known of the island’s monasteries. It was
founded in 1794 a.C. and completed in 1806 a.C. . Then it
was called «New Monastery» in order to distinguish it from
the other monasteries of the island.

From then on the history of the monastery became part of
island’s history. It often helped the inhabitants of Kastro
and supported the needy. The monastery, like many in Greece,
was a refuge for freedom fighters during the War of Independence.
There, in 1807, was raised the first Greek flag of the war.
